CTOnews.com, Nov. 19 (Xinhua)-- American consumers face a lot of hidden fees and price increases when paying their Internet, phone and cable bills. A 2019 survey of more than 2000 American adults by Consumer report found that about 85 per cent of Americans had paid unexpected or hidden fees for the services they used. Thankfully, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has just passed a rule to curb spending on these extra fees.

CTOnews.com learned that the new rules require Internet service providers (ISP) to display easy-to-understand "nutrition labels" at sales outlets to enable consumers to make better decisions when buying broadband services. These labels should show such as price, speed, cost, data allowance and other key information. These labels will be similar to the nutrition labels you can find on food.

FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel said in a statement.

We are borrowing the food model to make basic information about Internet services easier to understand. The new rules require broadband nutrition labels to be fully displayed when consumers make a purchase decision.

This means that consumers can more easily learn about price, speed, data allowance and other aspects of high-speed Internet services. In addition, by requiring suppliers to clearly display entry rates, we are seeking to end unexpected and junk charges that may be buried in lengthy and troublesome statements of terms and conditions.
