Counterpoint: Q3 shipments of high-end smartphones in major markets in Southeast Asia grow 29% year-on-year

CTOnews.com, Nov. 22, Counterpoint Research released a report today that shipments of high-end smartphones (priced at more than $400, about 2800 yuan) in major markets in Southeast Asia increased by 29% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022, including Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Meanwhile, shipments of ordinary smartphones worth less than $200 (1400 yuan) in major markets in Southeast Asia fell 24%.

Total smartphone shipments in major Southeast Asian markets fell 10% year-on-year in the quarter, according to the report. Samsung shipments fell 13% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2022, but apple's shipments in major countries rose 63% year-on-year, with Vietnam growing faster than neighboring countries.

CTOnews.com learned that the report said 5G smartphones were not as expected in Indonesia and Vietnam, but were more popular in Thailand and the Philippines, where the Internet is more developed and consumer technology is more sophisticated.

In addition, according to Counterpoint Research, 5G smartphones accounted for 32 per cent of total shipments in major countries, and shipments of 5G smartphones with a year-on-year growth of 56 per cent in the third quarter of 2022 were up 73 per cent year-on-year.
