CTOnews.com, Nov. 22, Google TV and Android TV require Android installers to transition from the current APK format to AAB (Android App Bundle) format starting in May 2023. This requirement has been implemented in Android smartphones.

CTOnews.com learned that Android App Bundle is a distribution format that contains all the compiled code and resources that you apply, and it hands over APK generation and signature to Google Play. Google says switching to AAB has many benefits, including a 20 per cent reduction in average AAB footprint and a 60 per cent reduction in storage usage. In addition, Google stressed that the AAB format is helpful for running Android apps in a variety of device forms, and that operations such as app updates can be made smoother through Google Play Store.

Although there is only a six-month transition period, it sounds tense. But Google says it only takes an engineer about three days to repackage their APK app as AAB. Google has warned developers that their apps could be hidden in TV devices if they haven't been modified after May next year.
