Beijing, August 19 (Xinhua)-- streaming platforms led by Netflix surpassed cable networks for the first time in July 2022, accounting for the largest share of U.S. television ratings that month, according to the latest data. The data includes only programs watched on TV and Internet-connected TV, and mobile or online streaming is not taken into account. This result is expected, as the use of streaming media has continued to rise in recent years, while traditional cable television has declined in the continued impact of disconnection losses.

In July, American households' streaming services accounted for a record 34.8% of total household consumption, compared with 34.4% for cable and 21.6% for radio. Streaming has previously overtaken radio, the first time it has surpassed cable television. Among them, Netflix once again accounted for the largest share of the overall TV ratings in the streaming platform with a proportion of 8.0%, setting an all-time high. This is largely due to the nearly 18 billion-minute viewing of the film and television drama "Strange things 4" in July, as well as nearly 11 billion minutes of total viewing of "Wechin River" and "Umbrella College".

Overall, the use of streaming media increased by 3.2% in July compared with June, and the average broadcast time was close to 191 billion minutes per week. Compared with June, cable TV's ratings fell by 2% in July. The ratings of sports channels fell the most among cable TV, down 15.4% from June and 34% from the opening of the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games in the same period a year ago. In addition, the broadcasts of the NHL and NBA playoffs also have a great impact on sports ratings.
