Volkswagen CEO: its self-driving cars will become mainstream in 2030

CTOnews.com, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer said in an interview with AutoCar that the carmaker's self-driving cars will become the global mainstream by 2030 and that the company is "strengthening its development partnership."

"our goal is to provide our customers with the most powerful features as soon as possible and to conduct our development as cheaply as possible," Schafer said. "its software company Cariad will focus on self-driving development in China, while Bosch will become its partner in other parts of the world."

"the technology is already in place and we are conducting autopilot tests in Hamburg and Munich," Schafer said. "the cost of the cars is still prohibitive because there is too little production and there is always a need to prove that the system drives better than people, and the legislation is important and the situation is completely different from country to country."

"the focus must be on autopilot, where there are huge profits and opportunities. I wouldn't say winner takes all, but this is a game that needs to be played early and can't wait," he said.
