CTOnews.com learned that Let's Encrypt began to provide free domain name certificate issuance services in September 2015, and the first website to be issued was helloworld.letsencrypt.org, which has been providing free X.509 digital certificates for enabling HTTPS (SSL / TLS) and encrypted communications for the past few years.

Since August 2018, Let's Encrypt has been directly trusted by all major browsers and operating systems, as well as all major root certificate programs, including certificates from Microsoft, Google, Apple, Mozilla, Oracle and BlackBerry. This free and automated CA allows any domain name owner to obtain a trusted certificate at no cost. Now, the CA says it issues millions of copies every day.

As ISRG revealed today, this brings it to a new record this year because it now serves more than 300 million websites. "as of November 1, 2022, Let's Encrypt has issued 239m valid certificates to more than 309 million domain names to provide TLS services," ISRG said in its 2022 annual report today. Let's Encrypt's domain name usage increased by more than 33 million in 2022.
