Beijing, December 1 (Xinhua) the European Union has warned Elon Musk that Twitter will face a ban if he does not comply with the EU's strict content censorship rules, according to people familiar with the matter. The threat sets the stage for Twitter's future regulatory battle.

Thierry Thierry Breton, the EU industry minister, made the threat in a video conference with Mr Musk on Wednesday, according to people familiar with the matter. Mr Bretton told Mr Musk that he must abide by a series of rules, including abandoning the "arbitrary" practice of restoring banned users and agreeing to conduct an "extensive independent audit" of the platform by next year.

Bretton had previously urged Musk to comply with EU landmark rules on hate speech and false information online. Didier Reynders, the judicial commissioner of the European Commission, made similar comments.

However, Silicon Valley leaders welcomed the way Musk managed Twitter. Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings (Reed Hastings) even called the billionaire "the bravest and most creative man on the planet". Hastings said Musk's management style was different from his own, but added: "I am 100 per cent convinced that he is trying to help the world through all his efforts."

Facebook parent Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Mark Zuckerberg) said on Wednesday that he would like to see how Musk's management of Twitter content censorship develops. He believes that it is beneficial for different platforms to adopt different approaches.

"you can agree or disagree with what Elon is doing or how he is doing it, but I do think it will be very interesting to watch how it develops." "I don't think everything will work, but I think some of it might work," Zuckerberg said at the DealBook conference.

Twitter and the European Union have yet to comment.
