CTOnews.com, December 5, according to Indian media reports, India's first chip manufacturing plant will start construction in February next year at the earliest.

According to Mint, Ashwath Narayan, minister of information technology, electronics and skills development in Karnataka, India, said that if approved on time, ISMC Digital would build a $3 billion fab in Karnataka, which is expected to start in a few months.

CTOnews.com learned that ISMC, short for International Semiconductor Union, is a joint venture between Next Orbit Ventures, a United Arab Emirates investment company, and Tower Semiconductor, Israel. As a result of Intel's $5.4 billion acquisition of Tower Semiconductor, Intel may eventually own a stake in the ISMC plant in Karnataka.

It is worth mentioning that in May 2022, it was reported that the relevant consortium was preparing to build a fab in India, in which Next Orbit Venture Capital Fund and Gaota Semiconductor both decided to invest 3 billion US dollars to build a fab in India, which is expected to be operational within four to five years.

In addition, Foxconn and Vendanta, an Indian company, plan to build a factory in the western state of Gujarat, while Singapore's IGSS Ventures has also proposed to invest $3.2 billion in a semiconductor park in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, all after Karnataka.

It is reported that the Indian fab's monthly production capacity is expected to be 40,000, with an initial goal of producing 65nm process technology, which will be upgraded to 40nm process technology in the future, mainly used in areas such as automotive chips and defense chips.
