Seagate NVMe protocol mechanical hard drive exposure, U.2 interface
CTOnews.com December 7 news, according to TechPowerUp news, Seagate's first NVMe protocol mechanical hard drive has been exposed.
Source harukaze5719 It is reported that the above picture is Seagate's latest U.2 interface NVMe protocol Exos series enterprise disk.
In terms of interfaces, the U.2 NVMe (32Gbps) interface has significantly increased transmission speeds compared to traditional SATA (6Gbps) and SAS (12 Gbps), and future generations of rack DAS and NAS enclosures are likely to increasingly support U.2 interfaces, phasing out SAS and SATA.
CTOnews.com learned that HDD mechanical hard disk support was added to the NVMe specification version 2.0 released in 2021. Last November, Seagate demonstrated at the Open Compute Project Summit the industry's first mechanical hard drive that uses PCIe to connect to a host, using the NVMe protocol to operate seamlessly with SSD drives. According to reports, Seagate this product is based on Seagate's proprietary controller, supports all three major protocols, including SAS, SATA and NVMe, uses the "native NVMe interface" and does not require any bridges. Previous reports suggest that commercial PCIe / NVMe mechanical drives may not be available until mid-2024.
