CTOnews.com, December 8 (Xinhua) in its first vote last week, the San Francisco City Supervisory Board approved a policy that "allows the police to use robots with lethal capabilities." As soon as the news came out, it caused widespread controversy in American society. Due to external pressure, the San Francisco City Supervisory Board voted on the 6th to temporarily disapprove the use of these robots by the police.

On November 29, the San Francisco Supervisory Board passed a new policy by a vote of 8 to 3, allowing the San Francisco police to use lethal robots in special circumstances, China News Service reported. The policy must be re-approved by the San Francisco supervisory board and signed by the mayor before it can take effect. The Associated Press reported that the San Francisco Supervisory Board held a second vote on the 6th and unanimously decided not to adopt the policy for the time being.

Even if extreme scenarios are clearly defined, the San Francisco police are allowed to use robots to kill the suspects, which makes many people worry about whether the US police may abuse the cutting-edge technology of robots in the future and aggravate the conflict between the police and people of color. In addition, deadly robots will save the police from accountability.

CTOnews.com learned that Dallas police used bomb disposal robots equipped with explosive devices to kill a suspect who shot and killed five police officers in 2016, the first time US law enforcement agencies used robots as lethal force, and in 2018 a grand jury found that police law enforcement was justified.
