Elon Musk has arranged for Zhu Xiaotong, CEO of Tesla Greater China, to help run the company's newest factory in Austin, Texas, according to people familiar with the matter. Previously, Zhu Xiaotong had supervised the construction of Tesla's Shanghai super factory.

Zhu Xiaotong joined Tesla in 2014 to help build Tesla's network of supercharging stations and has recently reportedly been leading Tesla's Asia-Pacific operations. Mr. Zhu was in Austin this week, bringing some of his engineering team from China to help ramp up capacity at the Texas superplant, people familiar with the matter said. The Texas plant will become Tesla's hub in the United States, producing the Model Y and the future electric pickup truck Cybertruck.

People familiar with the matter said it was unclear how long Mr. Zhu would stay in Austin or whether he would remain in charge of Asian affairs. Tesla, Zhu Xiaotong and Musk have not commented on the matter.

Domestic media reported Wednesday that Musk decided to appoint Zhu Xiaotong as Tesla's global CEO, but his responsibilities are limited to the automotive business and do not include autonomous driving and robotics projects. At present, the news has not been confirmed. However, Tesla board member James Murdoch previously testified that Musk had considered stepping down as CEO and had found a potential successor.
