CTOnews.com, December 9 (Xinhua)-- Egypt is the second largest smartphone market in Africa and the Middle East in 2022, according to a Strategy Analytics research report. In the quarter, the size of smartphones in the Egyptian market fell sharply, down 33% from a year earlier and 11% from a month earlier. This is the second consecutive quarter of decline in this important market in the region.

The government's crackdown on imports, imposing a 10% tariff on mobile phones, triggered a drop in sales in 2022. The study predicts that smartphone sales in Egypt in 2022 will be much lower than in 2021. The downturn in the Egyptian market led to a 13 per cent year-on-year decline and a 2 per cent month-on-month decline in the entire African market.

CTOnews.com learned that in Egypt, Xiaomi leads the market, followed by Samsung and OPPO. These three companies account for 23%, 15% and 13% of the market share, respectively. In 2022, Chinese suppliers accounted for nearly 3 to 4 of the number of smartphones in Egypt, a share similar to that of nearly a year ago.

Recently, Samsung, vivo, OPPO and other manufacturers have expanded their local production scale. It remains to be seen whether this regional shift in manufacturing will restore market growth in 2023.
