CTOnews.com, December 11 (Xinhua)-- as early as October this year, Google announced that it would remove support for JPEG-XL image format from its Chrome / Chromium web browser, which was very unexpected. Google engineers believe that there is not enough interest in JPEG-XL and that the format does not have enough benefits over existing formats. Their plan is to remove support for JPEG-XL in Chrome 110s, when Google is actually on the move.

CTOnews.com learned that Google has officially removed JPEG-XL support from the Chromium / Chrome web browser code base during the code merge process that began yesterday.

Some users and developers continued to express their support for JPEG-XL and tried to push Google to change their position on removing JPEG-XL support, but these activities were unsuccessful.

Google believes that support for the format has been experimental and lacks ecosystem support and does not bring enough benefits, especially compared to alternative formats such as WebP and AVIF.
