Google launches ARCore geospatial API Challenge, offering a $50000 bonus for AR applications
CTOnews.com, December 13 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- ARCore acquired a geospatial API (Geospatial API) at Google I / O 2022, making it easier for developers to place virtual content in the real world. To encourage adoption of the API, Google is launching the ARCore Geospatial API Challenge.
With ARCore Geospatial API, developers can remotely attach content to any area covered by Google Street View, creating a global AR experience, according to Google. It uses device sensors and GPS data to detect the environment of the device, and then matches the easily identifiable parts of the environment with the positioning model provided by Google's Visual Positioning system (VPS) to determine the exact location of the user equipment. This API is also responsible for merging your local coordinates with geographic coordinates in VPS to work in a single coordinate system.
Some of Google's listed use cases for development with Geospatial API include directing users to specific locations and creating a location-based AR experience.
Google hopes to "create a unique application using ARCore geospatial API and have a chance to win one of 12 awards ranging from $1000 to $12000." In addition to navigation, the example use case includes starting the camera to determine where to park the scooter.
CTOnews.com learned that the first place will win $12000, the second place will win $8000 and the third place will win $5000. Google will also award $5000 for best navigation, games, local discovery and entertainment. Five honorary award winners will receive $1000, and Google will promote all the winners.
