CTOnews.com, December 13 (Xinhua)-- C++ is one of the three most popular programming languages used by developers today, new data claim.

CTOnews.com learned that the world-renowned TIOBE programming language community released the ranking of programming languages in December 2022. In the data released this time, C++ surpassed Java for the first time in the history of TIOBE, with a slight advantage of 0.12%. With 11.94% market share, it surpassed Java for the first time to take third place.

Java fell to fourth place, the first time Java has dropped out of the top three since the TIOBE index began in 2001. But Top5 is still Python, C, C++, Java and C #. JavaScript ranked seventh, PHP 12th, and Apple's Swift coding language ranked 15th, down from 10th at this time last year.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to C++ surpassing Java, Kotlin and Julia on the list are also getting closer to the top 20. Kotlin jumped from 28 last month to 23 Julia. Julia rose from 32 to 24.

The percentage of the TIOBE index is not calculated based on market share, but "based on the number of skilled engineers around the world, courses and third-party suppliers".

The definition of a successful programming language varies across the industry, and TIOBE metrics are just one way to measure them. Earlier this year, CirlceCI's 2022 software delivery report showed that the top three most popular programming languages were TypeScript, JavaScript and Ruby,Python in fourth place, while C and C++ didn't even make the top 10.
