CTOnews.com, December 15, according to Guangming Daily, optical fiber communications expert, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, doctoral supervisor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Zhao Zisen, died in Wuhan on December 15, 2022 at the age of 91.

Zhao Zisen was born in Shanghai in February 1932. Graduated from the Department of Telecommunications of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1953. He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995. He was the chief engineer of the Research Institute of Wuhan Academy of posts and Telecommunications, Vice President of Wuhan Academy of posts and Telecommunications, Senior Technical Advisor of Wuhan Academy of posts and Telecommunications, Vice Chairman of Hubei Science and Technology Association, and overall group leader of the Optical Fiber Communications expert Group of the State Science and Technology Commission.

Zhao Zisen is the main founder and recognized pioneer of optical fiber communication technology in China. He "pulled out" China's first practical quartz optical fiber and established the optical fiber communication technology scheme of our country. As the technological leader of the Wuhan Academy of Post Sciences, he built China's first optical cable communication project and an optical fiber communication line connecting the whole country. He has made outstanding contributions to China's optical fiber communication as one of the fields with the smallest gap with the international advanced level in high and new technology, and is known as "the father of China's optical fiber." He is also the main advocate of "China Optical Valley" and the promoter of "China Optical Valley".

Zhao Zisen has been "running" in the field of scientific research all his life. He often said: "Technology is always developing. If we don't move forward quickly, we will lag behind people. China's optical fiber now accounts for half of the world optical fiber market. Next, we will use new materials to make a higher level of optical fiber, and continue to lead the world."
