CTOnews.com, December 18 (Xinhua)-- Polestar plans to unveil its "Smart Eye" driver monitoring technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January to determine whether drivers can concentrate on driving rather than abuse the immature "autopilot."

According to reports, Polar's Smart Eye technology uses two closed-loop advanced driving surveillance cameras, which can track the movement of the driver's head, eyes and eyelids and trigger warning sounds or messages, and can even stop the car when the driver is distracted, or when the driver is found to be tired / nodding off.

Officials say the Smart Eye, combined with other driving aids such as lane maintenance and adaptive cruise control, helps ensure driver safety.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polar Star, said: "this technology can solve some common causes of fatal accidents, through AI technology to ensure that drivers can stay focused while driving, help save more lives, and also take precautions when they do not or cannot take timely measures."

In the United States, for example, drivers playing with their mobile phones while driving is the main cause of distracted driving accidents in the United States. NHTSA says 3142 people died in 2020 as a result of distracted driving.

CTOnews.com learned that Ji Xing is not the first company, and it is believed that it will not be the last car company to use this measure to protect the safety of drivers. For example, Tesla used cameras to monitor drivers' behavior in mid-2020, while GM also equipped its super cruise system with driver monitoring system, Ford also equipped its blue cruise with driver monitoring system, and Lucid also made its driver monitoring as the main focus of its DreamDrive suite. I believe that in the future, more car companies will choose to use cameras or AI to help drivers concentrate on driving.
