Wei Zhe-Jia, president of TSMC, responded yesterday that the main reason for setting up a factory in Japan is strategic support and also the largest supplier to TSMC's customers.

Wei Zhe-Jia said at a technology forum yesterday that because TSMC has a big customer whose biggest supplier is a Japanese manufacturer, if the biggest customer's products cannot be sold, TSMC's 3nm and 5nm cannot be sold, so we must support him.

TSMC's largest customer contributed NT $405.402 billion (about 92.026 billion yuan) in revenue last year, accounting for 26% of total revenue, according to financial data. It is widely believed that TSMC's biggest customer is Apple, and Sony is Apple's largest supplier.

CTOnews.com learned that Wei Zhe Jia pointed out that there was communication with customers at that time. If they set up a factory in Japan, there was not enough talent and manpower. I hope that customers can help. TSMC can provide customers with technology to build factories, but customers also understand that technology is one thing and manufacturing is another, so they have to cooperate with TSMC and send some engineers to help.

In addition, according to Wei Zhe-Jia, at the present stage, more than 200 engineers from Japan are being trained at the Taichung plant, and then TSMC will send 500 to 600 engineers to Japan to help build the production line. This is the result of the strategy discussed within the company to support the needs of the largest customers.
