CTOnews.com, December 20, Linux 6.2 incorporates the new "char / misc" code to support the Intel Habana Labs Gaudi2 AI Accelerator. "char / misc" can be said to be a "grocery library" of Linux code, and any drivers that do not apply to other subsystems will be classified here.

Gaudi2 is Intel Habana Labs's next-generation AI training and reasoning accelerator, competing with Nvidia's A100. Gaudi2 has relative advantages in computer vision, natural language processing and related workloads.

Gaudi2 was released earlier this year, and the Intel open source Linux team began releasing new patches to extend the existing "habanalabs" Gaudi and Goya Linux kernel drivers to support Gaudi2.

CTOnews.com has learned that more Gaudi2 code has been upstreamed in the past few Linux kernel cycles and continues in Linux 6.2. In Linux 6.2, the Habana Labs driver added user space API for page error messages, support for Gaudi2 PCI revision 2, hard reset support for hardware, and various fixes around Gaudi2.
