CTOnews.com reported on December 24, citing South Korean media The Elec, that Apple optical supplier LG Innotek plans to invest 1.65 trillion won (9.007 billion yuan) in a new plant to produce periscope (foldable zoom) and zoom actuators (actuators) for Apple's iPhone 15 model next year. The source said that the new plant was built specifically to give priority to iPhone 15 models.

CTOnews.com has learned that Apple will introduce a periscope camera in its iPhone 15 model next year, which will be manufactured by LG Innotek. The periscope zoom lens is commonly known as the "internal zoom" lens, and because the optical zoom is done inside the fuselage, it is easy to install the filter without the need for an additional lens barrel. Secondly, because the movement of "pulling bellows" is avoided, the "internal zoom" camera can effectively prevent dust from being sucked into the lens.

In addition, LG Innotek plans to showcase an ultra-compact mobile camera module at CES 2023 (January 5) to implement a non-reflective camera zoom lens mechanism on smartphones and achieve clearer images in the 85-125mm focal length range.

BusinessKorea also noted in the report that LG Innotek is supplying camera modules for iPhone. Sales to Apple continue to grow as a proportion of LG Innotek's total sales. The percentage is up from 61% in 2018, 64% in 2019, 67% in 2020, and 75% in 2021. Until the third quarter of this year, LG Innotek relied on apple for 74.8% of its sales.
