After Musk acquired Twitter, the number of user registrations on his small social networking site soared
Phoenix Technology News, Beijing time, December 27, according to CNBC, Musk owns a small social networking site, Mastodon, since he bought Twitter, with an average of about 130 new users per hour from October 1 to October 26. After Musk took control of Twitter on October 28, that number jumped to 2000 people per hour. After Twitter began mass layoffs, the number of registrations rose to more than 5000 per hour and peaked at nearly 10000 per hour after Twitter sent a dismissal email to employees on November 17.
It is understood that Mastodon is a platform similar to Weibo. User registrations on the platform have soared several times since the world's second-richest man bought Twitter at the end of October. Hourly data from Mastodon user counters show that the surge usually occurs shortly after some of Musk's most high-profile actions.
User registration for the platform peaked again in mid-December, when Twitter suspended journalist accounts covering Musk and the company and banned users from sharing Musk profiles on other major social networks. Since Musk bought Twitter, many people have created Mastodon accounts, including journalists, news organizations, writers and politicians.
As of last Wednesday, the tracker Instances.social tracked about 8.7 million users of the Mastodon site. Twitter reported 237 million users in the second quarter of 2022, 29 times its number. Facebook had 2.9 billion users in the third quarter of 2022, 300 times its size.
