The original intention of HandBrake software is to rip DVD content, convert existing video clips into videos that can be viewed on platforms such as iOS, and reduce the space consumption of video files through compression algorithms. In the 1.6.0 update, the video conversion tool supports AV1, VP9 10-bit, NVENC HEVC 10-bit and VCN HEVC 10-bit video encoding. The update also adds high bit depth and color depth support for various encoders and filters, as well as the introduction of new 4K AV1 and 4K HEVC presets.

Apple Silicon Mac owners can now use the 4:2:2 H.265 profile of the VideoToolbox encoder. The new version of the application also supports Intel deep link hypercoding to improve the performance of using multiple QSV media engines on Intel-based computers. But there's more. HandBrake can now be used with OpenBSD, while the Mac version supports Quick Look and provides localization improvements such as Japanese.
