Developers turned to Wayland, and the number of X11 Server proposals / revision lines reached the lowest level in 20 years.

CTOnews.com, December 31, most Linux developers no longer develop new features around X.Org Server and have migrated to the Wayland environment. According to X.Org Server's Git statistics in 2022, the number of proposals and code changes reached the lowest level in the past 20 years.

The number of proposals submitted to the xserver Git master branch this year is just 156, down from 331 last year and well below the peak of 2114 in 2008. This is in line with the continued decline in the number of new submissions over the past decade.

In addition to the rapid decline in the number of proposals, there are very few overall code changes. In 2022, X.Org Server added only 3618 new lines of code and deleted 888 lines. Last year, 314,000 new lines of code were added and 179,000 lines of code were deleted.

CTOnews.com learned that X.Org Server (X.Org Foundation Open Source Public Implementation of X11) is the official reference implementation of the X window system, which is open source free software. The project is run by the X.Org Foundation and is stored on the mainframe of freedesktop.org. Choosing XOrg as the package to provide graphics and desktop services is becoming more and more popular in Unix-like operating systems implemented by open source.
