CTOnews.com January 8-The European Southern Observatory recently captured a photo showing the Serpens nebula Sh2-54, 6000 light-years from Earth.

Sh2-54 is located near the Eagle Nebula, a busy region of star formation where clouds of dust and gas are coalescing to form new stars.

Nebulae like this are also called stellar nurseries, mainly because all new stars are formed in them. Astronomers can learn more about the life cycle of stars and the conditions required for star formation and growth through in-depth study.

This spectacular image of the Sh2-54 nebula was captured in infrared using ESO's VISTA telescope at the Paranal Observatory in Chile. Clouds of dust and gas that are usually visible in visible light are less visible here, and in this light we can see the light from stars behind the nebula.
