CTOnews.com, January 11 (Xinhua)-- Apple last year added a new feature to its Wallet wallet app that allows users to store their driver's license and state ID cards. It's just that at present, only a few states in the United States support this new feature. California Governor Gavin Newsom today outlined the California budget proposal 2023 and 2024, saying in his speech that the state was prepared to launch some kind of digital identity solution "within a few months" and advance deployment in a way that is different from other states.

"what we want to convey is that in the coming months, people will be able to access their driver's license through the digital wallet app," says Gavin Newsom. "not only will we do this like other states, but we will also ask them to climb another tall building."

California authorities did not share more details about digital ID cards and digital driver's licenses, and California's legislature has focused on privacy. As the Los Angeles Times outlined last year, digital IDs and corresponding mobile apps cannot collect or store any more information than is needed to perform the required functions, and all information is limited to the information on the actual driver's license or ID card.

The legislation also stipulates that digital ID cards are added selectively, users of digital ID cards cannot be forced to hand over their smartphones to verify their identity, and the use of devices as ID cards does not mean that law enforcement agencies agree to search smartphones.

CTOnews.com has learned that so far, Arizona, Maryland and Colorado support storing digital driver's licenses and ID cards in e-wallet applications.

Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah have all promised to allow residents to add California ID or driver's licenses to their wallet apps, but the timing is unclear. Apple has been discussing support with many other states and Puerto Rico, but has yet to make a specific announcement for California.
