CTOnews.com, January 11, according to the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA), digital video game sales account for 90% of video game sales in the UK. It is worth noting that this includes mobile games, PC games and console games, and if mainframe games are considered separately, digital downloads are unlikely to account for such a large proportion.

Specifically, ERA found that 89.5% of game sales were made through digital downloads, while the other 10.5% were physical sales. Obviously, 30% of sales are mobile app sales, which shows its growing importance in the gaming field. There are far more users with smartphones than with game consoles, so it is easier to play games on the phone.

Kim Bayley, chief executive of ERA, said that although gaming grew faster than video and music last year, the industry was actually the leader in the entertainment market. Bayley describes games as "often unmentioned leaders" in the entertainment market.

The noteworthy aspect of the figures released by ERA is that many of the figures about digital downloads are just estimates. In the past, it was easier to track sales when sales were physical, Bayley said. Now, it becomes more difficult because digital stores such as Valve's Steam do not publish their sales figures. To estimate game sales, ERA cited Omdia Market Research's "industry benchmark" data.

CTOnews.com learned that with the launch of the latest Xbox game console, Microsoft did not release Xbox Series S with a CD-ROM drive. It is unclear whether Microsoft expects physical sales to fall or whether it is driving more digital sales as a result.
