CTOnews.com January 12 news, Paint.NET is a popular free image editor, now has a major feature update. Paint.NET version 5. 0 is available for download from the official website with many new features, improvements and fixes. It also abandoned support for Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, which were terminated by Microsoft on January 10, 2023. Now, Paint.NET 5.0 requires Windows 10 version 1809 and later.

Major changes to Paint.NET 5.0 include GPU rendering with more tools and plug-ins, stress sensitivity of stylus and tablet, embedded color profile support (Paint.NET currently does not support color management, which developers plan to fix in future updates), several new adjustment tools (exposure, highlights, shadows, temperature and hue), new effects, and a new plug-in system that supports hardware acceleration. Developers remind that the old Paint.NET plug-in will continue to run, but plug-in manufacturers now need to target their projects at new systems with many advantages.

CTOnews.com learned that in addition to giving up support for Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, Paint.NET also abandoned the 32-bit x86 platform. From now on, the Paint.NET program can only be installed on 64-bit systems (including ARM64) on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
