How to upgrade PS5 host system software If the system software upgrade on the PS5 host is blocked, restart the upgrade process. If the upgrade fails, download the upgrade file to USB drive and follow the instructions below.

Manually update PS5 system software:

Using a PC or Mac, create a folder called "PS5" on a USB drive formatted as FAT32. Within that folder, create a folder called UPDATE.

Download the upgrade file and save it in the UPDATE folder. Save the file as PS5UPDATE.PUP.

Insert the USB drive containing the files into the PS5 console.

Start PS5 console in safe mode: Press and hold power key, hear second beep and release.

Select Safe Mode Option 3: Upgrade System Software.

Select Upgrade from USB Storage> OK.

If your PS5 host does not recognize the file, check that the folder name and file name are correct. Enter folder and file names in capital letters.

Restart the system software download on the PS5 console: Press the PS key on the wireless controller to go to Control Center and select Download/Upload.

Highlight System Software Upgrade, then select Error, and then select Try Again.

If multiple downloads fail, use a USB stick to upgrade the system software on the PS5 console.

How to reinstall PS5 host system software: Reinstalling system software on PS5 host will delete all data on PS5 host. This process is often referred to as a factory reset or a hard reset.

Download the reinstall file (via the button below) and save it in the UPDATE folder. Save the file as PS5UPDATE.PUP.

Select Safe Mode option 7: Reinstall the system software.

Select Upgrade from USB Storage> OK.
