CTOnews.com, January 14, according to PC World, JEDEC will officially adopt "CAMM" as the next-generation notebook memory standard to replace the current SO-DIMM memory.

According to Tuyuan Dell, JEDEC committee member and Dell senior engineer Tom Schnell said that JEDEC is developing a new notebook memory specification to replace the SO-DIMM memory standard, which has been in use for 25 years.

Tom Schnell created the original CAMM memory design for Dell last year, which was first used on Precision 7770 mobile workstations. JEDEC's CAMM standard will be based on Dell CAMM, and the final specification may be different.

Tom Schnell said that about 20 companies in the task force voted for the plan, and the acceptance was very good. JEDEC aims to complete the 1. 0 specification in the second half of 2023 and launch a CAMM-based system next year. The first JEDEC CAMM memory module should be released when SO-DIMM memory reaches 6400 MT / s, replacing SO-DIMM.

Tom Schnell envisions the future of CAMM memory, saying that it can achieve the high transmission speed of LPDDR6 in the DDR6 era, while also supporting disassembly and upgrade.

Image source Kingston CTOnews.com learned that the notebook memory now uses the SO-DIMM specification shown in the figure above, and there are DDR5-5600 specifications and the capacity of a single 32GB is optional. In contrast, CAMM can achieve larger capacity and faster speed.
