CTOnews.com, January 15 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced on Saturday that the UK will ban companies from selling and providing disposable plastic products such as plates and tableware before the end of the year. The law will be fully implemented in the UK in October 2023.

In addition to some plastics, the ban will also cover disposable trays and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers, but will exempt plates, trays and bowls in supermarket ready-to-eat meals; the government intends to implement a separate plan to encourage and raise recycling standards for manufacturers.

The CTOnews.com has learned that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says British consumers use 2.7bn disposable tableware a year, of which only about 10 per cent are recycled. The department said it had consulted the public before issuing the announcement, and 95% of the people consulted were in favor of the ban.

Environment Minister Th é r è se Coffey said: "We have listened to the views of the public that the implementation of this one-off plastic ban is an important measure for us to protect the environment for future generations."
