Beijing, January 16 (Xinhua) according to Japanese media reports, China is the undisputed leader in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) research papers, far surpassing the United States in quantity and quality.
According to the study, China has always ranked first in the world in terms of the number of AI papers. In 2021, China published 43000 papers, about twice as many as in the United States, and the study measured the quality of papers according to the top 10 percent of citations. In 2012, the United States took the lead with 629 articles, while China ranked second with 425 articles. China later made great progress and finally overtook the United States in 2019. In 2021, China accounted for 7401 of the most cited papers, about 70 per cent more than the US.
However, American companies still dominate the AI research rankings. Google parent companies Alphabet, Microsoft and IBM are the three most productive companies for AI papers in the past decade. In 2021, six American companies ranked among the top 10 most cited AI studies.
In terms of the number of papers and the number of citations, Tencent Holdings, Alibaba Group, Huawei Technology Company and State Grid Corporation are among the top 10 companies in AI research papers. Baidu ranked 11th. In 2012, only one Chinese company entered the top 10 in the number of AI papers. Chinese companies are steadily gaining representation in this ranking dominated by American companies.
Japan, by contrast, is falling back in the AI sector. The number of AI research papers in the country fell from 6th in 2019 to 9th in 2021, ranking 18th in terms of research quality. NTT, a Japanese telecom company, is the number one AI research company in the country, ranking 17th among global enterprises.
