CTOnews.com January 19 news, Google today officially shut down its Stadia cloud gaming service. Launched in November 2019, the service is designed to support cloud-based gaming on a variety of devices, including PCs, Chromebooks, Macs, iPhones and iPads.

In early 2021, reports of Stadia's lackluster performance among gamers began to emerge shortly after Google decided to close its only in-house Stadia game development studio, Stadia Games and Entertainment (SG&E), which was only two years old.

Since announcing the service's closure in September 2022, Google has been making good on its promise to refund anyone who purchased Stadia services in the course of its operations, including games, downloadable content and the controls provided by the service. Google Inc. began processing refunds in November and had previously said it expected to process "most" refunds before the platform shut down.

CTOnews.com learned that Stadia control handles are designed to connect directly to Stadia servers via Wi-Fi, not to a host or PC, but each control handle contains an unused Bluetooth chip. So Google has provided owners with tools to enable Stadia control handles to be Bluetooth enabled, which will allow them to be used with native devices after the Stadia platform is turned off.

Google released Worm Game, the final Stadia game, last week, a beta game that marks the shutdown.

In the months leading up to the platform's closure, the Stadia Store had closed and all commercial activity on the Stadia platform had ended, including in-game trading.
