Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, January 22 (Xinhua)-- Game engine developer Unity has laid off nearly 300 people, mainly in administrative, IT security and marketing departments, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"given the current economic situation, we have reassessed our goals, strategies and priorities, and while we are still focused on the same vision, we have decided that we need to be more selective in our investments in order to become a stronger company," said John Riccitiello, chief executive of Unity, in a letter sent to employees by the Wall Street Journal.

Riccitiello explained in a statement that Unity is "dealing with overlapping issues in a very specific manner, and a few projects will be locked up in cabinets." One of the projects involves the use of 3D volume cameras that allow viewers to watch sports broadcasts from any angle they want. "

"in the current economic situation, this is not a good time to bring it to market," Riccitiello added. "We are letting the team leave, even though we are excited about the work they are doing."

CTOnews.com learned that Unity had already made a round of layoffs in June last year, when 225 employees lost their jobs, just six months after the layoffs.

Unity also recently acquired IronSource, a mobile application management company, bringing the total number of employees of Unity before the layoffs to about 8000. Even with the layoffs, Unity's workforce has grown significantly because its last filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission showed that Unity had a total of 5245 employees.
