CTOnews.com, January 28 (Reuters)-the Paris Institute of political Science, one of France's top universities, has banned the use of ChatGPT to prevent fraud and plagiarism. ChatGPT is a chat robot based on artificial intelligence, which can generate coherent articles or papers.

ChatGPT has a free version of the program that can generate original text on almost any topic at prompts, including articles, assignments, jokes and even poems, raising concerns about plagiarism in various industries.

The university said on Friday that it had sent emails to all students and faculty, announcing a ban on the use of ChatGPT and all other artificial intelligence-based tools at the Paris Institute of political Science.

"in the absence of a transparent reference, students are not allowed to use the software to produce any written works or presentations under the supervision of the course director, except for specific course purposes," the Paris Institute of political Science said, but did not specify how to track usage.

According to US media reports, ChatGPT has been banned in some public schools in New York City and Seattle, while several universities in the United States have announced plans to reduce home assessment and increase handwritten papers and oral exams.

The Paris Institute of political Science, which has its main campus in Paris, added that the penalty for using the software could be so severe that it could be expelled from the school or even the entire French higher education system.

"ChatGPT software is raising important questions for educators and researchers around the world, involving fraud in general and plagiarism in particular," it said.

CTOnews.com learned that Microsoft recently announced a further multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI (OpenAI is the artificial intelligence research laboratory behind ChatGPT), building on its bet on OpenAI nearly four years ago, when Microsoft invested $1 billion. OpenAI was co-founded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and investor Sam Altman in 2015.

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, said recently that OpenAI would develop ways to help schools identify AI cheating. But he warned that there was no guarantee that cheating would be fully detected.
