Sources say Sony has moved most of its camera production to Thailand, where Chinese factories are self-sufficient.

CTOnews.com, January 29, according to the Nikkei News, Sony Group has moved the production of cameras sold in Japan, the United States and Europe from China to Thailand in order to protect its supply chain by reducing its dependence on China.

CTOnews.com learned that Sony's factories in China will in principle produce cameras for the Chinese market. So far, Sony cameras have been exported from China and Thailand. Sony's factories in China will retain some production facilities so that they can be put back into use in case of emergency.

In other words, Sony's China plant will not be responsible for producing cameras for the Japanese, US and European markets, but will in principle only produce products for China and retain some of the equipment that can be supplied outside China in emergencies such as disasters.

Sony said it "continues to focus on the Chinese market and has no plans to withdraw from China". Sony will continue to produce other products such as televisions, game consoles and camera lenses in China and export them to other countries.

According to Euromonitor, Sony's global camera share in 2021 is second only to Canon, with global camera sales of about 2.11 million units in 2022, of which 150000 are in China and more than 90% in Japan, the United States and Europe.
