The reshuffle is part of Honda's efforts to catch up in the fast-growing all-electric car market, where Japanese carmakers have been at risk of falling behind competitors.

Honda said in a statement that in the changes that took effect on April 1, the new division would consolidate its electrification strategy and the development of power products such as cars, motorcycles and generators.

Honda also said it would merge its current six regional operations into three regions, including North America, China and Japan, the rest of Asia and Europe.

Honda is expected to launch a lineup of medium to large cars in North America and China, while in other regions it will be a lineup of small to medium cars, a spokesman said in a briefing.

CTOnews.com learned that Honda set a goal last year to launch 30 electric vehicles worldwide by 2030, producing about 2 million electric vehicles a year.
