IDC:2022 annual tablet sales fell slightly, Chromebook fell off the cliff
CTOnews.com, February 5 (Xinhua)-- IDC's full year 2022 and fourth quarter 2022 market reports on tablets and Chromebook have been released, and the results are not satisfactory. Overall, the tablet market shrank 3.3% for the whole of 2022, but grew moderately by 0.3% in the fourth quarter of the same year. However, after a crazy 180.5 per cent growth in 2021, the Chromebook market is bound to normalize, with shipments falling 48 per cent for the whole of 2022 and 24.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2022.
As always, Apple and Samsung will be the main drivers of the market in 2022. Apple remains the leader, with a market share of 49.2% in the fourth quarter and 38% for the whole of 2022, followed by Samsung with 16.8% and 18.6%, respectively. In 2022, Apple was the only original equipment manufacturer to achieve a small 7% growth in 2022, while in the fourth quarter, the company recorded an impressive 28.8% year-on-year growth, while Samsung's sales grew slightly by 7.1% over the same period.
Amazon, Huawei and Lenovo have all recorded negative growth in both periods, and market analysts believe that in the future, suppliers should attract mainstream consumers to achieve long-term benefits. That's why some new players, such as OPPO and Xiaomi, launched a few mid-range tablets in 2022. This is especially true in times of economic downturn, where users will think twice before choosing a higher-specification tablet.
As for the Chromebook market, CTOnews.com learned that it performed poorly in 2022 compared with 2021, with shipments falling 48 per cent for the whole of 2022 and 24.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2022.
Unfortunately, analysts predict that any progress made by Chromebook outside education will fade throughout 2023, as demand for such devices is not very popular outside education.
