Supported by December 2026, Linux 6.1 confirmed the upgrade to long term support (LTS) version

Greg KH said it had planned to release Linux 6.1 as a LTS version when it was released in early December. However, he was waiting for the test results of Linux 6.1 from kernel stakeholders, so he shelved the matter.

He and co-maintainer Sasha Levin finally gathered enough positive responses to give developers the confidence to maintain Linux 6.1 as a LTS series version.

CTOnews.com intercepted the relevant information from Kernel.org as follows and found that Linux 6.1 LTS will continue to support until December 2026, 2 months longer than Linux 5.15 LTS. However, the Linux team may later extend the life cycle of Linux 6.1 to 2028.
