CTOnews.com, February 16 (Xinhua)-- the Justice Department's antitrust investigation into Apple has been escalating in recent months, according to the Wall Street Journal. Specifically the report stated that additional litigators had been assigned to the case and that new requests had been submitted for documentation and consultations with the companies involved in the investigation.

As part of the investigation, the Justice Department is investigating business practices in Apple's App Store store and whether iOS favors Apple's own apps and services over those provided by third-party developers and other companies, the report said.

Apple declined to comment on the report, but the company had previously denied that it had an anti-competitive operation and said App Store welcomed competition.

CTOnews.com learned that the investigation began in 2019, when the Justice Department asked Apple about its policy around App Store and met with developers to learn more about the App Store review process. If the Justice Department chooses to press ahead with the complaint, Apple will face an antitrust lawsuit from the US government.

Over the past few years, Apple has been accused or investigated of anti-competitive behaviour in several other countries, including the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea and Japan, many of which are related to App Store. As a result, Apple has been forced to make changes to App Store in some countries, such as allowing developers to provide alternative payment systems in South Korea.
