CTOnews.com, February 20 (Xinhua) according to the Nikkei News, Japan has recently determined measures to support battery investment in accordance with the Economic Security Promotion Act.

It is reported that Japan will subsidize 1/3 of the investment in battery plant equipment, which will contribute to the research and development of technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during production. The move is conditional on five years of continuous production and will strengthen Japan's domestic production of indispensable batteries such as pure electric vehicles (EV). In order to ensure a stable supply of important materials, in the second supplementary budget for 2022, the Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry of Japan provided 331.6 billion yen (currently about 16.978 billion yuan) for investment in the battery industry.

The scope of support includes battery components and raw materials, such as positive materials, negative materials and isolation layer. Once mass production starts, companies also need to report carbon dioxide emissions, including production, to the government. The plan, aimed at both domestic and foreign companies, aims to strengthen Japan's battery supply chain. At present, it has begun to accept applications from enterprises, and it is planned to determine the object of support in late April.

CTOnews.com has learned that the Japanese government plans to ensure 150 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity at home by 2030, which will be seven to eight times the current capacity. It is estimated that this will be enough to provide batteries for about 2.3 million electric vehicles with lithium batteries similar to Nissan's pure electric vehicle "Ariya", with a capacity of 66 kilowatt hours and a maximum range of 470km.
