Musk: Twitter will open source the algorithm, but be prepared to be disappointed

Twitter boss Elon Musk announced Tuesday that Twitter's algorithm will be open sourced next week. "Open source" means anyone can publicly access, view, modify and redistribute Twitter source code.

Musk wants to open source Twitter algorithm One Twitter user said in an interaction with Musk that if they can do this, they will be "really impressed." Musk then replied: "Our algorithm will be open source next week, first be prepared for disappointment, but it will improve quickly!" "

Musk prepares Twitter users for disappointment Musk describes himself as a "free speech absolutist" and polls users on Twitter to make big decisions. He has repeatedly said in the past that he supports the idea of open-sourcing the platform's algorithms. On the face of it, this move will help improve Twitter's platform transparency. In March 2022, he conducted a poll of fans asking them what they thought of open source algorithms. "I'm concerned that de facto bias in the 'Twitter algorithm' could have a significant impact on public discourse," he said."How do we know what's going on? "

Thomas Davidson, a professor of sociology at Rutgers University and an expert on hate speech on social media, said in an interview that open-sourcing Twitter algorithms and making them available to researchers could help combat extremist speech and determine how it spreads.
