CTOnews.com, February 23 (Xinhua)-- 9to5mac has found a new "ComputeModule" device in the Xcode 16.4 developer disk image released last week, which may hint at Apple's modular Mac Pro, a processor box for Apple's mixed reality display, or even a raspberry pie-like device.

According to 9to5mac, three things are certain: (1) the computing module exists, (2) the computing module is an entirely new device category that runs iOS or its variants, and (3) Apple has at least two separate computing modules under development, namely, ComputeModule13,1 and ComputeModule13,3. If these devices prove to be for consumers, they may arrive before the end of 2023.

9to5mac speculates that this computing module may be an external graphics card device for the new Mac Pro in the future, which may not be a traditional GPU, but is related to graphics performance and, of course, a replaceable processor unit.

CTOnews.com believes that the computing module may also be related to the upcoming Apple Reality Pro head display, which will use ultra-high resolution display and advanced hand and eye tracking technology, and will be equipped with more than a dozen cameras and sensors. It will also be driven by Apple M2 chip, which is likely to require a separate computing module.

The 9to5mac hopes that this computing module is the replaceable "brain" of the upcoming Mac Pro. Unlike other Apple computers, Mac Pro attaches great importance to scalability, and if some modules can be replaced with more powerful modules, it will be very attractive to Mac Pro users.
