The report points out that cameras are the most indispensable sensors for smart cars today. In 2019, the average number of cameras installed per car was only 2.2, and that number is expected to double by 2026.

In terms of millimeter wave radar, Omdia expects to be equipped with an average of 5-8 millimeter wave radars in autopilot systems with Level 3 and above to achieve blind spot detection (BSD), lane change assistance (LCA) and rear collision warning (RCA).

In terms of lidar, it is reported that the future lidar will develop towards miniaturization, high resolution (64 channels, 128 channels, even 200 channels, etc.) and low-cost solid-state solutions. In addition, the scheme of integrating lidar into a single chip will become a long-term direction of technology research and development.

Omdia said that in the coming decades, the demand for various types of sensors will be further magnified as smart cars accelerate the process of replacing traditional fuel vehicles. The promotion of autopilot will also promote the continuous innovation of sensor technology and promote sensor performance to a higher level.
