Qualcomm CEO Ammon: Apple is expected to launch its own 5G baseband next year
CTOnews.com, February 27 (Xinhua) if Qualcomm CEO is right, this year's iPhone 15 series will be the last model with Qualcomm 5G chips.
Apple has long been working on its own 5G modem chipset to replace the chips it bought from Qualcomm. But Qualcomm has previously confirmed that it will continue to supply 5G modems for this year's iPhone 15 series.
Now, Qualcomm CEO and President Cristiano Ammon has publicly talked about when Apple will launch its own 5G baseband. In an interview with Mobile World Congress 2023, Qualcomm CEO Ammon told the Wall Street Journal that this could happen soon. "[we] expect Apple to launch their own modems in 2024, but if they need us, they can come to us at any time."
CTOnews.com noted that Qualcomm had told its investors at one point that it would supply only 20 per cent of modems for Apple's 2023 iPhone, which later changed to "the vast majority". Now Qualcomm has changed its story, which seems to be mainly due to Apple's failure to launch its own 5G modem as scheduled.
