CTOnews.com, March 7 (Xinhua)-- Lonestar issued a press release on Monday, saying it recently completed a $5 million seed wheel financing to build a data center on the moon.

Lonestar, a Florida-based company, plans to build a viable data storage and edge processing platform on the lunar surface.

"data is so important to us that it is difficult to store properly in the earth's increasingly fragile biosphere. The moon, the largest satellite on earth, is an ideal place to safely store our future data."

Lonestar plans to launch a small data center box into the lunar surface later this year. The lunar data center will initially be targeted for remote data storage and disaster recovery, allowing companies to back up data and store it on the moon. In addition, data centers can assist businesses and private enterprises in entering the lunar environment.

CTOnews.com learned from the report that the mini data center weighs about 2 pounds (1 kg) and has a capacity of 16 TB. The first data center will get power and communications from the lander, he said. But the company hopes to deploy a fully independent data center on the lunar surface by 2026.
