Microsoft's Seattle regional office laid off 689 people, involving multiple departments.
CTOnews.com, March 7 (Xinhua) Microsoft laid off 689 employees in the Seattle area on Monday, according to documents released by the Washington State Employment Security Bureau.
A Microsoft spokesman for Tuyuan Pexels confirmed that the layoffs affected Microsoft offices in Redmond, Bellevue and Isaac. According to The Verge, the departments most affected include Mac version of Visual Studio, entertainment and equipment, Azure Edge + Platform and other departments. Last month, some employees working in Xbox, Surface and HoloLens departments were also affected.
Similar to previous layoffs, laid-off employees will receive two months of severance pay, six months of stock awards, six months of health insurance coverage, career change services and 60 days' notice of dismissal.
The job cuts are part of Microsoft's plans to cut 10, 000 employees in January as part of its broader cost-cutting measures. That means Microsoft has so far laid off nearly 2200 workers in the Seattle area, equivalent to 22% of the company's global layoffs.
CTOnews.com notes that Microsoft is not the only technology company that has recently made massive layoffs. Other companies include Google, Meta (formerly Facebook), Spotify, Amazon and Twilio.
