CTOnews.com, March 9 (Xinhua)-- Google had the opportunity to launch a chat robot technology tool similar to ChatGPT two years ago, but executives were too cautious to prevent it from being released, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. The technical tool was created by two Google researchers who allegedly told colleagues that their creation could revolutionize the way people search and use computers on the Internet.

People familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that the two researchers, Daniel de Freitas and Norm Shazer, wanted Google to publicly showcase the technology and integrate it into Google Assistant Virtual Assistant, but executives were not convinced, claiming that the technology did not meet the company's standards of "security and fairness" for AI systems.

Two years later, Microsoft did what Google didn't: they funded OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, released a public beta and integrated it into Bing's search engine.

Google, meanwhile, is catching up with Microsoft's own version of ChatGPT, called Bard, which the Wall Street Journal says is based in part on the work of de Freitas and Shazer.

Despite missing the launch opportunity, Google and its parent company Alphabet have huge resources to ensure the rapid growth of Bard, giving it a chance to compete with any Microsoft product. As for de Freitas and Shazer, they were clearly discouraged by Google's unwillingness to take risks in their jobs, and they left the company in 2021.

It is worth mentioning that CTOnews.com reported earlier today that Google management had issued a so-called "code red", including a directive that all of its most important products (that is, products with more than 1 billion users) must add AIGC support within a few months.
