The chief cause of these printers that use third-party ink cartridges is HP's Dynamic Security function, which detects whether printers use original ink cartridges.

HP's official explanation for this function is: "Dynamic Security communicates with printers through security chips or electronic circuits on ink cartridges. HP uses Dynamic Security to protect the quality of customer experience, maintain the integrity of our printing systems, and protect our intellectual property rights."

CTOnews.com learned from reports that Hewlett-Packard introduced Dynamic Security in some printers in 2016 and paid millions of dollars in a class action lawsuit in 2018.

"Hewlett-Packard has pushed updates for a number of printers to completely prevent users from using non-original cartridges," Reddit community user grhhull wrote in a post. You can't perform any printing tasks until you insert the original cartridges. After contacting Hewlett-Packard, the reply is due to recent updates.
