Following the Infineon Power Management IC order, Samsung wafer foundry made a new breakthrough in power semiconductors.
CTOnews.com, March 11, according to DigiTimes, The Elec and other media reports, Samsung Foundry, the contract manufacturing unit of Samsung Electronics, has expanded its cooperation with German power semiconductor giant Infineon to produce metal oxide-silicon field effect transistors (MOSFET) for the latter since last year.
As an innovation leader in the international semiconductor industry, Infineon provides advanced semiconductor products and complete system solutions for wired and wireless communications, automotive and industrial electronics, memory, computer security and chip card markets.
Infineon (infineon) power MOSFET is a metal oxide-silicon field effect transistor designed for low-voltage applications with high switching speed and excellent efficiency. This innovative technology is a core component of many applications, including consumer electronics, power supplies, DC-DC converters, motor controllers, radio frequency (RF) applications, transportation technology and automotive electronics.
Although Samsung Foundry has the leading process nodes in the industry, it is still not strong enough in the field of analog semiconductors such as power management IC. CTOnews.com learned from the report that unlike power management IC and logic chips, the smaller the size, the lower the performance, so it is mainly made of traditional nodes of 90nm or higher.
The power management IC discrete market was worth $35.28 billion last year and is expected to reach $61.3 billion by 2029, an average annual growth rate of 8.2 per cent, according to QY Research. MOSFET's market share is 35% in 2022. Samsung may produce other Infineon power management IC, such as IGBT, according to sources.
