The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology encourages students to use ChatGPT for extra points.

CTOnews.com, March 14 (Xinhua) according to the Hong Kong Economic Daily, a course at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology encourages students to use ChatGPT in their mid-term reports and promises to give extra points. Huang Yueyong, Associate Professor and Senior Advisor (Entrepreneurship) of the University of Science and Technology, who is in charge of the course, believes that ChatGPT will have a far-reaching and irreversible impact on future learning styles and can enhance students' depth of knowledge and creativity, and calls on the educational community to practice its application and discuss its impact as soon as possible.

Earlier this month, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology first announced that it would be up to teachers to decide whether or not to allow students to use ChatGPT. Unlike other Hong Kong universities that ban or restrict the use of ChatGPT or other AI tools, HKUST management wants to encourage people to "learn as soon as possible", Mr Huang said. He also said that when grading, more attention should be paid to students' dialectical thinking and reflective ability when interacting with ChatGPT.

CTOnews.com noted that the University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University announced last month a temporary ban on the use of ChatGPT by students. The Vice-Chancellor (Teaching) of the University of Hong Kong, Mr Ho Lap-Yan, sent an email to teachers and students on March 9, reiterating that the relevant policy would remain unchanged until the end of the current year in August.
